Three types of imagery are collected using SANDCAM - snapshot images, time exposure images and variance images. Snapshots are what a traditional still camera takes showing the present view of the beach and surf. A time exposure image is the average video signal collected over a 10-minute interval which often clearly shows the location of features such as the shoreline and alongshore sand bar. Variance images are similar to time exposures, but show the regions of variable (rather than stable) intensities as bright patterns.
